General:
- City of Chicago Department of Senior Services: Check out their website; it has plenty of useful information for Chicago’s senior population, including information on senior services, regional senior centers and assisted living.
- Illinois Department of Aging: This state agency’s website has even more information for seniors, including legal assistance, elder abuse prevention, volunteer programs and Illinois area agencies on aging.
Continuing Education:
- Senior Net: Senior Net’s mission is to provide senior citizens with access to and education for computer technologies to enhance their lives and enable them to share their knowledge and wisdom. For more information visit their website.
Healthcare:
- Administration on Aging: The federal agency responsible for advancing the concerns and interests of older people and their caregivers, working to develop a comprehensive system of home and community-based long-term care. Call 202-401-4634 or visit their website for more information.
- Office of Healthcare Access: This City office acts on behalf of health care consumers through education, advocacy and policy development. Their goal is to increase awareness and knowledge amongst the senior population of the healthcare options available to them. For more call 312-745-2273.
- Senior Medicare Patrol: The Chicago Department of Senior Services’ Medicare Patrol (SMP) educates senior citizens on how to avoid, detect and report Medicare fraud and abuse. Call 312-744-3007 or 312-744-8176 and ask for the Medicare Patrol.
Housing:
- Assisted Living and Shared Housing: A private-pay alternative for people needing assistance with daily living for Illinois residents. For a list of establishments, click here. For the application, click here.
- Housing Relocation Service: This City service provides housing advice, support and assistance to senior citizens in the city who are homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless. Call 312-744-4016.
- Nursing Homes: These provide long-term care for senior citizens who need around the clock living assistance. For information on homes in the state of Illinois visit this link and scroll down to “Nursing Homes” for a number of options.
- Reverse Mortgage: These reverse mortgage loans are home equity loans designed to enable seniors to receive income for the equity of their homes. Available to seniors over the age of 62, these loans are HUD-insured. For more information visit the AARP website.
- Supportive Living: This state of Illinois services is for low-income seniors under Medicaid, combining apartment-style living with personal care. Visit this link.
Home Repair:
- Home Repairs for Accessible and Independent Living (HRAIL): This program is for seniors who earn less than 80% of the median income, adjusted for family size. For more, visit this link.
- Upkeep and Repair Services Program: This program provides free minor home repairs to eligible seniors. For more call 773-921-3200.
Transportation:
- Door-to-door service: The Chicago Department of Senior Services in cooperation with the Chicago Transit Authority offers specialized transportation services for eligible seniors. To apply or see if you qualify, please call 312-663-4357 or 312-744-4016.
- Emergency Medical Transportation Service: This program is available to eligible seniors with no other means of transportation to medical facilities. For more information call 312-744-4016.
- Senior Shuttle Service: This city program provides seniors with free weekly transportation to nearby grocery stores. Call 312-744-4016 for more information. Additionally, the Senior Building Transportation Service offers free transportation for errands.
Volunteering/Employment:
- Foster Grandparent Program: This program offers senior citizens with the opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life and get involved in their communities. Call 312-744-4016 for more information.
- Senior Community Service Employment Program: This program provides assistance to those 55 or older in re-entering the job market. Call 312-744-4407 for more information.
